Welcome to the latest episode of Sustainable Style, where we highlight all of the fresh, ethically- and sustainably-produced apparel and accessories available here at our little retail shop in Encinitas, CA. I always say that it's hard working here at Thread Spun, but only because I'm always unboxing the constant flow of new apparel and handmade jewelry and I have to try my hardest to refrain from buying it all!
(I'll be honest though, sometimes the temptation is too much and one or two things end up coming home with me.)
Since I need to practice more self restraint, I figured in leu of buying I could just pop on here and rave about a couple of my faves from the most recent drop of new arrivals. We've got tons of new sustainable denim and hemp goods as well as some truly unique jewelry from our partners in Haiti. Read on for all of the details including info on how we're sharing resources with Haiti following the devastating earthquake there.
Boyish Denim
We had three more jean styles from Boyish come in last week and I'm. In. Love.
Boyish jeans are made in ethical factories using the most environmentally conscious means of producing their denim. Designed in LA, their goal is to create vintage inspired styles using men's fabric tailored for a woman's body through an environmentally-friendly and cruelty-free process. They're a brand with integrity and style, making jeans that you can feel as good buying as you do wearing them. These are sustainable jeans that look great on every body type, and you'll feel great when you wear them, too.
A high-waisted, hip hugging fit - these are the perfect basic skinny jeans that'll flatter any body and work with any style. Think classic Americana and a wash that will easily take you from day to night.
These jeans give you room to groove with a straight leg and relaxed fit. The wash is perfect for sneakers or jeans, and they're made from REFIBRA™ technology, which recycles cutting scraps into reusable fibers that are mixed with Tencel™ Lyocell to make more denim. Cute and eco-friendly jeans for one and all.
I think these ones are my favorite style out of the drop (the temptation to buy just might win this time). They're comfy and cute, but I'm a sucker for high-waisted wide leg pants. And raw edges..but that's just me. The exposed fly-buttons give this style just the right amount of retro flair, and they look great paired with all of our
Jungmaven tees and raglans.
Jungmaven
Jungmaven hemp goods are a customer favorite at the shop and the
Lorel Mountain Stripe Tee is a rad addition to the collection. It's got a vintage feel to it with the cut and the dyed yarn gives it a subtle texture. I love the pop of color it adds to a pair of jeans too.
Jungmaven's mission is to raise awareness about the many uses of hemp, and why its regenerative qualities make it a desirable alternative to finite, natural resources that are less healthy for the environment. Fashion is a form of activism: what we choose to wear says both who we are and what we stand for. Making beautiful, high-quality hemp clothing is our way of creating a medium through which we can all demand change with our dollars and express what kind of future we want to live in. Choosing a hemp tee is a small, simple act– but it’s one that can change the world. Hemp’s potential to mitigate climate change is one of the greatest opportunities of our generation. Learn more

Haiti Design Co.
Haiti Design Co. is a shop staple. We've carried them since our humble beginnings here in Encinitas. This social enterprise is comprised of a team of 12 talented Haitian women who create some really beautiful and unique pieces using leather and beadwork, living by a "waste not, want not" motto. Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, we are sending all of the profits from the sales of these fresh arrivals back to the
Haiti Design Co. Wellness Program. This is a beautiful program that provides nutritious lunches, subsidized health insurance, educational seminars and more to the artisans.
The
Daisy Chain collection is absolutely adorable and remind me of the beaded necklaces I wore as a kid but with a more grown up approach with the gold and glass beading.
Their leather goods are just as beautiful like the
Katya Earrings or
Milot Necklace, they'll add a bit of personality and a story to any outfit. Always made entirely by hand with upcycled leather.
Just in case you or a loved one is going back to school, perhaps a heavy duty canvas and leather accented backpack is more your speed. The Djanm Backpack features a pocket for your laptop and optimal storage space, along with a clean look. She's a classic.
The Haiti Design Co. sewing team, known as “Ekip Fanm Vanyan” (meaning Team of Warrior Women) specialize in handbags and home decor. They use ethically sourced leather, and source canvas and denim fabrics from factories with deadstock materials in the Dominican Republic and USA.
